Widgets and watch faces

Without sending a notification, you can keep a value in sight: today’s revenue, open support tickets, server load, a backup’s progress. The value shows up in:

  • iPhone and Android: the PushBell widget on the home screen.
  • Apple Watch: the top of the watch app and PushBell on the watch face (circular, corner, rectangular, inline).
  • Wear OS: the PushBell tile and watch face data.

Without a widget value, these places show the unread count and the latest notifications.

Terminal window
curl -X POST https://api.pushbell.app/v1/glances \
-H "Authorization: Bearer pb_live_…" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"title": "Today", "text": "$12,450", "subtext": "38 orders", "count": 38, "percent": 62}'
Field Description
title The value’s label (“Today”, “Queue”); up to 100 characters
text Main line; up to 100 characters
subtext Second line; up to 100 characters
count An integer, can be negative; shown on small screens (watch faces)
percent 0–100; a progress bar or ring
to User key (u_…) of someone on your team. If missing, the workspace owner
device Only this device of that person (the device’s name in the app)

At least one value field is required. The fields you send replace their old values and the rest stay as they were; send null to remove a field:

{ "percent": null, "text": "Backup finished" }

At most one update per minute is delivered to the same person (or device); updates in between are merged and the latest value goes out. Send the value at sensible intervals (e.g. every 5 minutes or when it changes), not on every event.

  • Android and Wear OS: usually updated within seconds; Android may delay it while the phone is in deep sleep. If the device is offline, only the latest value waits.
  • iPhone and Apple Watch: iOS may delay background updates to save battery; the value catches up as soon as the app opens.

For anything urgent or that must be seen right away, send a notification, not a widget value.

  • In the app: Settings → Add widget to home screen. On Android the widget is added directly; on iPhone long-press the Home Screen, then Edit → Add Widget → PushBell.
  • Apple Watch: long-press the watch face, tap Edit and pick PushBell for a slot.
  • Wear OS: add the PushBell tile; pick PushBell in a watch face’s data slot.

Pushover’s Glances API works too: POST https://api.pushbell.app/1/glances.json (token, user, device, title, text, subtext, count, percent). As with Pushover, an empty value clears a field.
